The Ideas First Project employs a design research method to study the design and implementation of Knowledge Building classrooms for science education at Primary 3 and 4 levels. The focus of this project was to deepen students’ understanding of subject matter and acquisition of 21st century skills. We started our work with Primary 3 and 4 teachers and students at Townsville Primary School (TVPS), which had strong leadership support from the principal and the Head of Dept (Science) and strong commitment from the teachers. Our intervention included iterative cycles of co-designing KB lessons with teachers, employing Knowledge Forum as a mediating technology tool, and examining the learning processes and learning outcomes among the students. To provide a multifaceted perspective of the intervention outcomes, the data we collected both quantitative and qualitative data.
