Serious Immersion and Embodied Learning: Traces of Dinosaurs in Earth System Science
Voyage to the Age of Dinosaurs (VAD) explores various ways to support meaningful learning of Earth system science for Singapore’s secondary level Geography in and out of school boundaries. We propose that fossils and fossilization process of extinct creatures (e.g., dinosaurs) can become powerful conceptual and motivational anchors to learn complex Earth’s processes. Through an informant design process, our team initially investigated secondary geography students’ misconceptions on Earth system and ideas about meaningful learning environments and teachers’ reflections on their teaching, students, and educational innovations. We have been continuing collaborative design practices with teachers and students in the design of an educational game and hands-on activities and implementing (and further designing) across formal and informal learning contexts.
